Kwesi Koo Nyarkoh
Impressionism with Cultural Narrative

Kwesi Koo Nyarkoh is a Ghanaian artist whose impressionistic paintings explore the depths of identity, memory, and cultural heritage. Since establishing his full-time practice in 1994, Nyarkoh has developed a distinctive visual language that centers on tribal face paint as a narrative device, transforming traditional adornment into powerful storytelling.
Nyarkoh’s work is characterized by bold, arresting color palettes and an impressionistic style that brings immediate emotional impact. His large-scale portraits create intimate connections with viewers through meticulous detail and commanding presence. Each piece moves beyond mere beautification to reveal the cultural significance embedded in traditional face painting, honoring stories and traditions that might otherwise go untold.
With a foundation in graphic design and an unexpected early path through soccer, Nyarkoh brings a unique perspective to his artistic practice. This diverse background informs his ability to balance technical precision with expressive freedom, resulting in works that are both visually captivating and culturally resonant. His paintings are available through various galleries and art platforms, continuing to build bridges between traditional African cultural expression and contemporary artistic dialogue.
Nyarkoh enrolled in Art School while trying to pursue his dream of playing soccer. Halfway through school, he was informed that he was the top of his art class, which caused to completely change direction and pursue Art full-time!
He also taught art to other promising students and has authored two books already about basic drawing, shading and painting, which are now widely used in Ghanaian schools. Nyarkoh's greatest fulfilment in life comes from the excitement in completing a painting and seeing people appreciate it!
