Eric Odartey Cruickshank

Linear Expressionism

Eric Odartey Cruickshank (b. 2000, Accra, Ghana), known professionally as Lines Being, is a   self-taught contemporary artist whose work uses the language of lines to   explore identity, emotion, and cultural narrative. Born and raised in Accra,   he grew up surrounded by the visual storytelling traditions of Ghana, which   shaped his fascination with the expressive power of form and gesture. Over   time, this fascination evolved into a signature style that transforms lines   into living, breathing entities—each one charged with rhythm, emotion, and   memory.

Eric works across various media, including   acrylics, charcoal, and mixed media, allowing the line itself to become the   central character of his art. To him, every stroke, whether delicate or   assertive, carries emotional resonance. Through this approach, he crafts   human figures and abstract forms that communicate both vulnerability and   strength. His art frequently draws inspiration from traditional Ghanaian   patterns and ancestral motifs, reinterpreting them within a modern context to   reflect how heritage continues to shape contemporary identity.

At the heart of Eric’s practice is an   exploration of humanity, the ways people evolve, connect, and carry stories   within themselves. His work speaks to themes of self-awareness,   transformation, and belonging, while confronting the layered experience of   Black identity in a global context. Influenced by artists such as Vincent van   Gogh, Kerry James Marshall, Egon Schiele, and Amoako Boafo, Eric brings   together emotional depth and cultural dialogue in a body of work that is as   introspective as it is socially aware.

His rising career includes both local and   international exhibitions, such as Piloloo   Art Exhibition, Automania Art Exhibition, The Boundaries Beyond   Figures (Arushi Gallery, Los   Angeles), Flowism (ArtSwap, Ghana), Accra   Art Fashion Week & Art Exhibition  (African Art Gallery), Shaping the Narrative (Arthouse, Ghana), Adwen wo Ogya ho  (Grolman Gallery, Germany), and The   Art Gala III (The Mix Design Hub,   Ghana). He was also recognized with the “Best Unique Talent” award at the WTB   Awards, and his portfolio includes portraits of renowned figures such as the   late Kofi Annan.

Currently studying at Takoradi Technical   University in Ghana’s Western Region, Eric continues to refine his craft   while directing WhiteCube Studios, a creative venture dedicated to innovation and   collaboration. Through his evolving practice, he seeks to bridge past and   present, local and global, personal and collective—inviting viewers to see   the human experience as a series of interconnected lines that form the story   of who we are.
