Koakh Senvati

Mixed Media Sculptural Painting

Koakh Senyati (b. 1997) is a self-taught Ghanaian artist   celebrated for his innovative approach to painting on wood.

His artistic journey began under the   guidance of his father, Frederick   Oko Matey, a renowned Ghanaian sculptor, with whom he   collaborated for four formative years. This father-son tutelage shaped   Senyati’s creative philosophy and sparked his enduring fascination with the   intersection of painting and sculpture. What emerged from this apprenticeship   is an artistic practice rooted in experimentation, emotional depth, and an   instinctive respect for material.

Working primarily with mansonia wood and other resilient hardwoods, Senyati   transforms natural surfaces into vibrant, tactile narratives. His paintings,   marked by textured geometric strips, flowing paint drips, and abstract forms,   embody a dialogue between control and spontaneity. The intricate maze-like   patterns he creates evoke both the woven rhythms of traditional fabric and   the aerial geometry of urban landscapes.

True to his inventive spirit, Senyati   incorporates unconventional materials such as metal screws, bolts, nuts, and recycled LED screens into his compositions. These elements not only   expand his visual language but also speak to his concern with sustainability, renewal, and transformation. Through   his hands, discarded materials gain new purpose, merging craftsmanship with   environmental reflection.

Beyond their visual richness, Senyati’s   works probe deeper themes of authority,   complexity, and the unseen. Each piece invites viewers to look beyond color,   texture, and form to uncover layered narratives about humanity’s relationship   with material, memory, and the environment.

With his ability to fuse sculptural   sensibility and painterly imagination, Koakh Senyati stands as an emerging   voice of remarkable promise in contemporary art. Every piece he creates is a   conversation, between artist and material, between tradition and innovation,   and between art and the ever-evolving world it seeks to reflect.
